The allowance is paid before a period of minimum 15 consecutive days of holiday. In case of shorter holidays, only part of the allowance is paid proportionally, unless differently agreed in writing.
When the sickness allowance is 55% or 60%, an additional 5% is allocated if: - the remuneration is equal to or below 500 euros - if there are more than 3 children in the family up to 16 years old or up to 24 years old if receiving a family allowance - if there is a disabled child in the family receiving an allowance.

A serious or fatal accident must be communicated by the employer within 24 hours to the labour inspectorate (ACT: Autoridade para as condições do trabalho)
In construction, if the employer does not comply, the responsibility lies with the subcontractor within 24 hours and after that with the main contractor.
